In yet another authoritarian intervention in the field of culture, Donald Trump has fired Kim Saget, director of the Smithsonian Institution\u2019s National Portrait Gallery, as part of his systematic effort to align cultural institutions with his far-right political agenda. In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump called Saget \u201can extremely partisan figure\u201d and \u201can ardent supporter of DEI (diversity, equality, and inclusion)\u201d \u2014 concepts he apparently sees as a threat to his regressive vision. The decision demonstrates his hostility to any effort to promote social justice and inclusion, turning cultural policy into a tool of ideological cleansing. <\/p>\n\n
The move follows Trump’s broader interventions at top cultural institutions. Kim Saget, an internationally renowned art historian, was appointed the Gallery\u2019s first female director in 2013.
