The 2nd Diversity In Cities Conference 2026, titled \u201cHumanizing Life: Inclusion Starts in the Neighborhood,\u201d was held with great success on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the Serafio of the City of Athens. The event was co-organized by Diversity Charter Greece, the City of Athens, and Athens Development S.A.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The conference served as a vital forum for dialogue and the exchange of best practices regarding Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion in cities, with an emphasis on the crucial role of Local Government in shaping inclusive policies and strengthening social cohesion. The aim of the event was to highlight the need for more humane, accessible, and sustainable cities through partnerships and modern policies that meet the needs of all citizens. <\/p>\n\n

At the opening of the conference, official welcoming remarks were delivered by representatives of the government and local government.<\/p>\n\n

Stavros Milionis,<\/strong> Chairman of the Board of KEAN and Head of Diversity Charter Greece, <\/em>stated: \u201cToday\u2019s meeting is not just another institutional event, but a meaningful reminder that our cities reflect the values and level of cohesion of our society. The quality of a society is judged by the way it stands by its most vulnerable citizens, and it is precisely there that inclusion meets the responsibility of local government. As Umberto Eco pointed out, the language of Europe is \u2018translation\u2019 . In the modern city, this \u201ctranslation\u201d means understanding diversity and translating the needs of every citizen into substantive policies, accessible services, and practical care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Next, Domna Michaelidou, Minister of Social Cohesion and Family<\/strong>, noted: \u201cInclusion is not an abstract concept. It begins in the neighborhood, on the street, at school, at the municipal office, in citizens\u2019 daily interactions with their city. A modern city is not judged solely by its infrastructure or development, but by whether every person can move about, work, participate, and feel safe. Local government plays a decisive role because it is closest to citizens\u2019 daily lives and can put equality policies into practice. At the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family, we support initiatives such as the Diversity Label and every effort that makes cities more accessible, fairer, and more humane. I congratulate KEAN, Diversity Charter Greece, and their President, Stavros Milionis, for organizing the 2nd Diversity in Cities Conference 2026,\u201d while Labor Minister Niki Kerameos <\/strong>stated that \u201cToday\u2019s initiative demonstrates that local government is not merely an administrative institution, but a catalyst for social change. Because when inclusion begins in the neighborhood, it can embrace the entire society. \u201cFrom my position at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, I firmly believe that equal opportunity is a moral obligation for all of us, but also a prerequisite for progress and development,\u201d and concluding on behalf of the government, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security Anna Efthymiu<\/strong> noted that \u201cFor me, local government is a deeply experiential relationship and not a theoretical concept. As Deputy Minister, we place particular emphasis on equality, diversity, and the meaningful participation of all in social and economic life. With unemployment now below 8%, our goal is to further strengthen the presence of women, young people, the elderly, and people with disabilities in the labor market and in decision-making institutions. At the same time, in the face of demographic challenges, we are building a sustainable social security system for future generations by strengthening the TEKA and promoting new measures for the Occupational Insurance Funds with more incentives and flexibility for workers and businesses.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

On the part of the local government, the Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas<\/strong> -among other things- stated: \u201cFor us at the City of Athens, inclusion is not just a slogan, but a steadfast policy and a daily practice. Through awareness-raising activities in every neighborhood of Athens, public campaigns such as the message \u201cThe ramp is for everyone,\u201d and initiatives that bring people with and without disabilities together, we are working toward a city that is truly open and accessible to all. At the same time, we place special emphasis on the employment inclusion of people with disabilities through employment initiatives, Career Days, and the pilot program \u201cHEFAISTOS,\u201d through which we train municipal staff to better serve citizens with disabilities in municipal services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Dimitris Kafantaris, Secretary General of KEDE<\/strong>, focused on the message of this year\u2019s conference: \u201cAt KEDE, we believe that social cohesion, equal opportunities, and the active participation of all are prerequisites for sustainable and people-centered cities. Strengthening the Diversity Charter in the country\u2019s municipalities is a substantive commitment to more open, accessible, and inclusive local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

For his part, the Vangelis Marinakis, President of Athens Development S.A. and Assistant Professor at the National Technical University of Athens<\/strong>, noted that \u201cThe Athens Development Agency is not limited to implementing projects, but actively contributes, under the guidance of Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, to shaping policies that strengthen social cohesion, accessibility, and quality of life in the city. Through social programs, European initiatives, and cultural projects\u2014such as the City of Athens Festival, featuring more than 350 free events\u2014we give real meaning to inclusion by promoting social care, accessibility, the right to work, and everyone\u2019s participation in city life. For us, a truly modern city is one that creates space for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

In closing his remarks at the conference, Dimitris Maravelias, President of EETAA S.A<\/strong>.,<\/strong> stated that \u201cIt is not enough for the cities of the future to be smart, green, or digital. They must be democratic, open, accessible, safe, and humane. We await the results of the Conference\u2019s proceedings with great interest, with the intention of applying the knowledge expected to be gained in the context of planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating actions to ensure democratic, resilient, and sustainable local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

During the conference, mayors from across Greece, representatives of local government, deputy regional governors, and representatives of KEDE, in the presence of a minister, proceeded to sign and reaffirm the Diversity Charter in Greece, confirming their commitment to promoting equality, inclusion, and social cohesion in local communities.<\/p>\n\n

The first panel<\/sup><\/strong> of the conference, titled \u201cCities Take a Stand: Local Government as a Lever for Inclusion,\u201d<\/strong> focused on the crucial role of municipalities in shaping policies for social inclusion and equality at the local level. The discussion was moderated by the President of the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, Aria Agatsa,<\/strong> who set the pace and ensured the thematic coherence of the discussion. The panel included Nikos Babalos, Mayor of Heraklion, Attica; Dimos Verdos, Mayor of Eurotas; and the Mayor of Mandra – Eidyllia, Armodios G. Drikos, the Mayor of Skiathos, Theodoros Tzumas, and the Mayor of Lykovrysi – Pefki, Marios Psychalis <\/strong>, who shared their municipalities\u2019 experiences and approaches to issues of social cohesion, inclusion, and local development, highlighting best practices as well as the challenges faced by local communities.<\/p>\n\n

The discussion was moderated by journalist Eleonora Orfanidou from the \u201cDames Spathi\u201d<\/strong> program on Athens 9.84, who set the stage for a lively and substantive discussion on issues of equality and social participation.
