The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) filed an intervention in the Council of State in support of the constitutionality of the law on equality in civil marriage. The NHRC’s intervention was supported before the Court on Friday, April 11, 2025, by the First Vice President of NHRC, Yiannis Ioannides, and Katerina Trimmi, a member of NHRC.

In the intervention of the EEDA, signed by the President of the National Committee, Professor Maria Gavouneli, the rejection of the application for annulment filed by associations against Decision No. 15796/20-02-2024 of the Minister of the Interior (B’1258) on the subject: “Amendment of the decision of the Minister of the Interior under reference F.131360/12476/08-05-2013 “Determination of the type and manner of keeping the registry books of the Registry Offices” (B’ 1107), regarding the recording of the data of parents and spouses on the registry acts of birth and marriage – required adjustments to the “Citizens’ Registry” Information System – addition of new standard registry acts”.

It is noted that this is the first time that the EEDA has participated in a case before a Greek court after the passage of Law 4780/2021 (A’30), which completely reformed its legislative status and gave it legal personality.

As EEDA member K. Trimmis emphasized in her statement: “The institutionalization of civil marriage between persons of the same sex and the consequent recognition of same-sex relationships between parents and their children is consistent with the principle of equality, is consistent with the principle of non-discrimination and ultimately contributes to the protection of family life at its absolute core.”
