According to the latest edition of the Trans Rights Index and Charter of Transgender Europe (TGEU), this year marks the first time in the 13-year history of these tools that trans rights have not only stagnated, but have regressed .

From Hungary revising its Constitution to exclude the recognition of non-binary identities, to the rise of transphobic discourse at the public and political level in several member states, Europe appears to be abandoning the values of equality and fundamental rights that it has historically invoked.

These are not “isolated incidents.” This is a structural regression , which occurs alongside the reinforcement of authoritarian narratives, the questioning of the rule of law, and the imposition of social “standards” that exclude people who do not fit stereotypes.

The TGEU report is not just about trans communities. It is about the whole of Europe. It shows that the fundamental right to self-determination is not a given. That respect for an individual’s identity remains a political issue.

The trans experience is today becoming a barometer of democracy. When rights begin to be stripped from the most vulnerable groups, it is only a matter of time before everyone is affected.

DiversityNews calls on institutions, local communities and European solidarity networks to stand up against this invisible but dangerous slide. Not only for trans people, but for the very essence of democracy on our continent.
