At a time when global challenges require collective responses, the city of Athens is taking an important step towards intercultural understanding and inclusion, strengthening its ties with Shanghai, one of the world’s largest metropolises.
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, recently traveled to China as an honorary guest at the Shanghai International Forum on Cooperation and Friendship of Cities . There, he presented his vision for a world where cities collaborate not only on technological progress and climate resilience, but also on promoting understanding between different cultures .
“The only way to make the world a little better is through understanding and cooperation,” he emphasized.
Diversity as wealth
The Athens-Shanghai meeting was not just a diplomatic mission. It was a powerful message that when cities open up to each other, they recognize diversity as a source of inspiration and not an obstacle .
During the visit, the Mayor of Athens participated in discussions on resilience and sustainable mobility , in contacts with innovation representatives, as well as in events at Hellas House , where he presented a platform aimed at strengthening cooperation between Greek and Chinese businesses.
Inclusion starts with dialogue
The signing of a twinning agreement between Athens and Shanghai, the participation in the ITB China tourism exhibition with an emphasis on sustainable tourism , and the visit to the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), highlight the importance of education, language and cultural exchange as tools of inclusion.
Haris Doukas did not fail to thank the Greek students and professors of the institution, saying that they are the most worthy ambassadors of Greek-Chinese friendship.
“Athens is and will remain a reliable partner, a hub of culture, entrepreneurship and innovation,” he said.
A shared vision for an inclusive world
This visit is not just about economics or technology. It is a reminder that cities, as places where different languages, religions, backgrounds and experiences meet, can become catalysts for social change .
Athens and Shanghai show us that inclusion begins with the will to get to know the other , to learn from him, and to build bridges – even if we are separated by thousands of kilometers.
