The Brown Bin at the Service of All: An Action for a Sustainable and Inclusive Athens

2 Min Read

The Municipality of Athens is taking another important step towards environmental awareness and equal access for all citizens to modern waste management services. The new Household Biowaste Collection program, recently expanded to the 7th Municipal Community, embraces the diversity of the city and builds conditions for sustainable coexistence.

The information campaign for Greek-Russians – a region with a strong multicultural character – is proof that recycling knows no borders or discrimination. The distribution of materials and small bins for the home is aimed at everyone without exception: families, the elderly, workers, immigrants, people with different daily lives and needs.

With 80 new brown bins with an ergonomic design and a special biofilter, as well as almost 3,000 households receiving recycling equipment, the city sends the message that the circular economy is built with everyone’s participation.

Deputy Mayor Roxani Bey emphasizes: “Citizen participation is the most powerful tool for a clean and sustainable city.” And this participation must be inclusive, with tools and information accessible to all.

Guided by environmental justice and aiming to cover every neighborhood – regardless of social composition – the Municipality is moving dynamically towards 2030 and the European target of 60% recycling.

Because a green Athens is an Athens for everyone.
