Energy in the Hands of All of Us

In the Athens we dream of – a fair, inclusive and sustainable city – no one should be left in the dark. For the first time, the Municipality of Athens , through the Office for Combating Energy Poverty (GAEF), is putting energy democracy and justice for all into practice, with a new ally: the Energy Benefit Card.

This card is an innovative initiative that aims to provide substantial support to energy-vulnerable citizens. It is given nominally to households that have been assessed as energy poor by GAEF and offers significant discounts and preferential prices for the upgrade of their homes. From smart solutions such as thermostats and LED lamps, to aluminum frames, solar panels, water heaters and thermal insulation materials, the Card ensures access to quality energy solutions. Partnering companies such as ALUMINCO, ISOMAT, LEROY MERLIN, PUBLIC and SIEMENS are already participating in the action, actively supporting this vision.

Within its first year of operation, GAEF has already demonstrated substantial work. It has certified the exemption from municipal fees for 130 households, has evaluated more than 400 applications, while offering free energy inspections and issuing Energy Performance Certificates for beneficiaries with low incomes, so that they can join the favorable regulations. Its work continues at a steady pace and with a clear goal: to transform Athens into a fairer, more sustainable and more resilient city for all its residents.

“Municipalities can lead in social policy,” stressed the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas , noting that energy justice is a promise that has become a reality. The Energy Benefit Card is another step towards inclusion, equality and substantial support for citizens who need it.

For information and applications, interested parties can contact GAEF at 1595 or send an email to gaef@developathens.gr. Energy is a human right – and in Athens, it is practiced daily.
