In Piraeus, recycling is not just an ecological act. It is a celebration of inclusion, a life lesson that unites children, families and communities around values such as respect, acceptance and love for the environment – and for people.
For yet another year, the Municipality of Piraeus has proven that change starts with the little ones, when it embraces everyone . The innovative program “Katharoula” , based on the fairy tale “Mrs. Katharoula’s Shop” , addressed all primary, special and almost all private schools in the city, giving a voice to every child .
Recycling thus becomes a means of expression and empowerment. Children with different abilities, from different cultural backgrounds, special education students, all participated equally and created fairy tales with a common message: the world changes when we see the other as a valuable part of the whole.
With the support of the Mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis , who firmly supports experiential, inclusive education, and the inspiration of journalist and writer Lia Lappa , “Katharoula” entered dozens of classrooms, building bridges of understanding and acceptance through the simplest yet powerful tool: the fairy tale.
The students spoke of heroes who respect the environment and their neighbors . They spoke of clean and humane cities. They created together with their parents – proving that when education connects generations, cohesion is strengthened.
The action was reinforced by the distribution of brown bins for bio-waste and a dialogue about recycling in simple, accessible language for all students , without exceptions.
The Great Recycling Celebration in September will honor the imagination and voice of every child – not just with awards, but with the affirmation that diversity is strength and that the world we build must have room for everyone.
Because recycling is about the future. And the future should be inclusive, colorful and open – just like the dreams of our children.
