Today, work is not just a means to economic survival. It is a crucial pillar of well-being, especially in societies that seek to be just, inclusive and humane. The modern worker demands not only a satisfactory salary, but also a supportive environment that promotes mental health , equality and respect for diversity .
According to the World Health Organization, mental health is “a state of well-being in which people realize their own potential, can cope with the stresses of life, work productively and make a contribution to their community.” Yet, problems like anxiety and depression continue to affect millions of workers worldwide, costing the global economy more than $1 trillion a year in lost productivity.
In countries like Greece, the situation is particularly worrying. The European Social Survey shows that our country has the highest average rate of depressive symptoms in Europe. This is directly related to working conditions, insecurity and the lack of inclusive policies.
Good mental health means inclusive and equal workplaces
Employees are demanding more than just a contract. They want a culture of respect that supports their needs, regardless of gender, age, origin, disability, sexual orientation or mental health. Good mental health is a human right and a key component of an inclusive society .
According to a recent survey, 75% of Greek workers say they now place greater importance on mental health – both their own and that of their colleagues. New forms of work, such as teleworking, flexibility and access to wellness programs, are no longer considered “luxury benefits”, but tools for equality and social empowerment .
Inclusive policies for sustainable workplaces
The “ENA” Institute has submitted proposals for a policy that strengthens mental health based on inclusion, equality and justice in the workplace, such as:
- Combating all forms of harassment and violence, by strengthening meritocracy and equality.
- Supporting caregivers through flexible policies and social benefits.
- Establishment of leave for mental health reasons.
- Access to mental health specialists in the workplace with full respect for privacy.
- Inclusion of people with psychosocial difficulties in the labor market with appropriate supportive measures.
Public initiatives with a social dimension
The establishment of the Employee Support Day Centers in Attica and Thessaloniki, an action of the Ministry of Health with funding from the Recovery Fund, is moving in a positive direction. The Centers offer free support from scientific personnel to enhance mental well-being, promoting the creation of a work culture that supports every person without exclusions.
Mental health is everyone’s business
At a time when Greeks appear at the bottom of Europe in quality of life and optimism indicators, the need for an inclusive, fair and mentally healthy work environment is more urgent than ever. Diversity is not a problem to be managed, but a wealth to be exploited . A society with mentally healthy workers is a more resilient, more creative, more humane society.
