Athens plans “15-minute Open Neighborhoods” with a focus on inclusion and equal access for all
Athens is taking another step forward to become a more inclusive , accessible and resilient city. The Municipality of Athens invites citizens to co-shape the new urban identity of the capital through the “15 Minute Open Neighborhood” program, which started on Thursday , July 10 , at 6:30 PM , from the Kypseli Municipal Market .
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas , emphasizes: “The “15-minute Open Neighborhood” is coming to Athens, breathing new life into the urban fabric of our city. We want every resident — regardless of age, ability or social status — to have everything they need nearby: education, health, greenery, culture. Everything within 15 minutes, without the need for a car. With the participation of citizens, we CHANGE the city.”
The program is based on open participation and pluralism , aiming to capture needs from all communities of the city. Through consultations and participatory workshops in all 7 Municipal Communities , residents are invited to map their neighborhood, express ideas and propose solutions for a more functional and inclusive everyday life .
The Deputy Mayor for Urban Revitalization and Resilience, Maro Evangelidou , explains: “The “15-Minute Open Neighborhood” is a new urban concept. Using digital tools, highly effective interventions will be proposed, such as pedestrian crossings, widenings and improvements for people with disabilities. We are creating a priority framework for the accessibility and sustainability of public space.”
