The classroom should be a safe, dignified and welcoming environment for all children – without exception. And this is exactly what the Municipality of Athens is striving for, with a broad program of renovation and upgrading of over 70 school units across the city.
Work is underway that includes exterior and interior painting, floor restoration, window maintenance and air conditioning installation, with the aim of creating a friendly and functional environment for all members of the educational community.
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, visiting the 57th High School and High School in Ampelokipi, stated: “In the summer, schools close for students and open for Municipality crews… See you in the new school year in modern, renovated and welcoming classrooms.”
The importance of such interventions goes beyond aesthetics . Every improvement is an investment in equity , accessibility , mental well-being and educational empowerment . Students from vulnerable social groups – children with disabilities, children from migrant backgrounds, children from supported families – deserve a school that does not remind them of their marginalization, but welcomes them.
The Deputy Mayor for Infrastructure, Andreas Grammatikogiannis, added: “The Municipality of Athens, its technical services are listening to the needs… We are waiting for the children in September, in the renovated classrooms, to enjoy the lesson safely.”
By upgrading the school units, the Municipality sends the message that education must be accessible, functional and safe for everyone – because the right to education does not discriminate.
