This initiative, announced at the end of April, is a shining example of the application of the “social farming” philosophy in Greece, with the direct aim of integrating and empowering vulnerable groups.

“Social farming” is an approach that uses agricultural activities as a means of providing social and therapeutic care services. Within a natural, structured environment, the individuals who participate develop skills, improve their mental and physical health, and enhance their social interaction. It is not just agricultural work, but a holistic program that promotes well-being and autonomy.

The application of this method for people with neurodiversity is particularly beneficial. The contact with nature, the sensory experiences offered by cultivation, the structure and predictability of agricultural work, as well as the opportunity to collaborate in a supportive context, can significantly contribute to reducing stress, developing fine and gross motor skills, learning new skills and strengthening self-confidence. At the same time, the cultivation space functions as a meeting point and socialization, combating isolation and creating a sense of “belonging”.

The Municipality of Rafina – Pikermi, by providing the appropriate space and the necessary support, shows the way for how local government can lead in actions of practical inclusion. The integration of people with neurodiversity into the community through productive and creative activities, such as cultivation, is vital for building a truly just and equal society.

This particular initiative in Rafina – Pikermi is a promising example that we hope will find imitators throughout Greece. It shows that with vision and targeted actions, we can create environments where every person, regardless of their differences, can develop, contribute and live with dignity and participation.
