On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Sunday, March 8, 2026, many municipalities in Attica organized events to honor the strength, contributions, and timeless struggles of women, highlighting the importance of equality and empowerment in society.

Municipality of Athens: The city runs for equality
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, participated in the 14th Athens Half Marathon, where the city broke all participation records with 33,000 runners. In a post on social media, he emphasized:
“Athens ran today in the 14th Half Marathon, breaking all participation records! We honored International Women’s Day by sending a strong message of equality and solidarity. We would like to thank the Association of Greek Gymnastics Clubs for supporting the Women’s Shelter for Victims of Violence with a donation of €10,000.”
The participation of the Municipality of Athens in the event highlighted the connection between sports and social awareness, while honoring women who fight for equality and justice.
Municipality of Piraeus: Honour and awareness for all women
With a particularly moving event at the Municipal Gallery of Piraeus, the Municipality of Piraeus highlighted the multifaceted role of women in society. The Mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis, stated: “International Women’s Day is a reminder of the struggles for equality and the need for us all to continue working together towards a society with equal opportunities, respect, and justice. Women make a decisive contribution to the progress of society.”
The event was attended by leading figures and representatives of local government, such as:
- The Minister of Education, Sofia Zacharaki
- The Deputy Regional Governor for Strategic Planning and Olympic Champion Stavroula Antonakou
- Elina Verykaki, Municipal Councilor for Volunteering
- The President of the Equality Committee, Deputy Mayor for Public Health and Social Services, George Vitsas
- The President of the Piraeus Dental Association, Michalis Agraniotis
The event included music by pianist Vicky Papadopoulou, awareness-raising activities in Agios Konstantinos Square, and a minute’s silence for women victims of violence.

Municipality of Marousi: Honoring women’s contributions
At the OTE Academy Amphitheater in Marousi, the Municipality of Marousi organized a tribute event for women who have contributed to local government. The event was organized on the initiative of the Mayor of Marousi, Theodoros Abatzoglou, the President of the Municipal Committee for Gender Equality (D.E.P.I.S.) of the Municipality of Marousi, Eleni Lekka, and in collaboration with the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Irini-Maria Chalioti, with the aim of recognizing the contribution of women who have made a significant contribution to the progress of the local community. Mayor Theodoros Abatzoglou emphasized: “Despite significant achievements, gender equality has not been fully achieved. The Municipality of Marousi was one of the first municipalities to establish an Equality Committee, with the aim of strengthening the position of women in society.”

Municipality of Papagos-Cholargos: Honors and Awards of Excellence
The event for Women’s Day was held at the Town Hall, with the presentation of honorary distinctions and “Pitsa Liapi” Excellence Awards. The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Mimi Roufogali, were responsible for organizing the event.
Women who have distinguished themselves in culture, sports, education, and social contributions were honored, while greetings were delivered by, among others:

- Member of Parliament Zoi Rapti
- Honorary Mayor Vasilis Xydis
- The representative of the Regional Governor, Loukia Kefalogianni
