Stavros Milionis at the 1st Diversity Conference for Local Government: “All different, all equal”

“We are here to unite our voices and declare that we embrace diversity, that we recognize that we are ALL different and ALL EQUAL… but without the same opportunities,” emphasized the chairman of the Board of Directors of KEAN and founder of Diversity Charter Greece, Stavros Milionis , giving the impetus for the start of the work of the “1st Diversity Conference for Local Government”.

Technopolis hosted the conference, which brought together representatives of local government, business entities and organizations, with the aim of devising strategies to strengthen inclusion and diversity in local communities. At the same time, it sought to highlight best practices and provide tools and knowledge for the development of diversity integration strategies in Local Government Organizations.

Mr. Milionis referred to the historical course of the Diversity Charter, which was founded in Greece in 2019 and already has more than 300 member companies, affecting thousands of employees. “It was immediately realized that the Charter should also address public bodies and organizations, given that a very large part of the population works there,” he emphasized, highlighting the need for broader integration of diversity in Greek society.

“Today, in the 21st century, we still see inequalities in the rights of people with disabilities, in access, in racial and religious discrimination. Despite progress, stereotypes remain. And unfortunately, for the first time in recent years, human rights are being targeted again,” he pointed out.

He cited the words of Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker: “Tyranny demands your fear, your silence, and your compliance. Democracy demands your courage,” emphasizing that supporting diversity is not an opportunistic choice, but an ongoing struggle.

Focusing on the need for action by municipalities, Mr. Milionis noted: “Municipalities are the closest institution to the citizen, their direct point of reference. The adoption of the Diversity Charter sends a strong message of democracy and empathy.”

During the conference, best practices and policies for inclusion were presented, while reference was made to upcoming actions through Diversity Days, which will focus on the pillars of diversity.

“With a lot of color, but without political overtones, with all voices present, but all under a common denominator, which is called humanity and respect for diversity, we are moving towards a better tomorrow,” concluded Stavros Milionis, completing his speech.

The conference was organized by the Municipality of Athens, the GSEE Institute and the EETAA, under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family, and was supported by important bodies and sponsors.
