DEI policies are not “fashion” and “public relations”

At a time when progress and social justice must be the cornerstones of business culture more than ever, there are forces seeking to overturn the status quo. The recent targeting of Diversity, Equality & Inclusion (DEI) policies by politicians such as Donald Trump is a worrying setback in the field of corporate governance and human rights policies.

DEI policies are not just ” fashion ” or ” public relations “. They represent a company’s commitment to a fair and inclusive work environment , where every person, regardless of origin, gender, sexual orientation or ability, has equal opportunities. These policies are an integral part of modern corporate governance and the code of ethical conduct of progressive businesses.

But let’s take a look at recent events:

  • The Trump administration has cut funding for DEI programs at the federal level.
  • He has issued executive orders restricting racial awareness training.
  • It has undermined efforts for equal pay and employment opportunities.

These actions are not just wrong – they are dangerous and counterproductive, undermining the best practices that have been developed to manage human resources and promote sustainable development.

Why Greek Businesses Must Resist

In an era of global uncertainty and rapid change, Greek businesses are called upon to play a leading role in creating a more just and inclusive society. Diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) are not just ethical imperatives, but also strategies that lead to success, according to the Greek Code of Corporate Governance.

More specifically:

  • Innovation and competitiveness: A diverse work environment encourages the exchange of ideas and perspectives, leading to innovative solutions and enhancing the competitiveness of businesses.
  • Attracting and Retaining Talent: Young workers, especially younger generations, are looking for work environments that respect diversity and promote equality. Businesses that embrace DEI have a significant competitive advantage in attracting and retaining talent.
  • Improving corporate reputation: Consumers and investors are increasingly aware of social responsibility issues. Companies that promote DEI enhance their corporate reputation and gain the trust of stakeholders, improving their investor relations.
  • Social cohesion: DEI contributes to the creation of a more just and equal society, strengthening social cohesion and well-being, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

The “list of shame”

Companies that choose to bow to pressure and abandon DEI policies are listed on a “list of shame”, which will serve as a reminder of their responsibilities towards society and strengthen the pressure for change. This practice goes against the principles of corporate governance and anti-corruption policy promoted by the Hellenic Corporate Governance Council.

The hope for a better future

Despite worrying trends, there are many companies that remain committed to the values of diversity and inclusion . These companies are shining examples and are showing the way to a more just and sustainable future, implementing sustainable development policies and following a code of ethical conduct.

It is up to us to demand that companies live up to their commitments to diversity and inclusion.

Let’s support businesses that promote equality and let’s not forget: history will judge our actions. Listed companies and public limited companies have the responsibility to lead this effort, implementing policies that promote transparency, privacy, and anti-violence and harassment in the workplace.
