During an event at Sorbonne University, Macron called these actions a “huge mistake,” underlining the importance of freedom and diversity in science.

In response to the US cuts, the European Union and France announced the “Choose Europe for Science” initiative, aimed at attracting scientists from the US and other countries. The initiative includes investments of €500 million from the EU and an additional €100 million from France, offering grants, long-term contracts and other incentives to support research in Europe.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that science has no passport, gender or political identity, and that diversity is vital for the progress of science. The initiative also aims to reduce bureaucracy and strengthen cooperation between science and business.

These developments underline Europe’s commitment to maintaining scientific freedom and attracting talent from around the world, offering a stable and supportive environment for research and innovation.
