“Inclusive Volunteering: Piraeus at the Heart of Inclusion”

3 Min Read

In Piraeus, volunteering is taking on a new, more inclusive dimension through a major initiative by the Region of Attica and the Municipality of Piraeus. The 1st Conference titled “Volunteering 2030: Institutions, Society, and Democratic Resilience” aims to highlight volunteering as a key pillar of a society that embraces diversity and promotes inclusion.

The event, which will take place on Sunday, March 22, is not merely a forum for dialogue, but an opportunity to redefine how we perceive civic participation. The focus is on the transition from fragmented actions to an organized framework that ensures that everyone—regardless of age, gender, background, or social status—has a voice and a role.

The conference topics address critical issues directly linked to inclusion:

  • the creation of an institutional framework that excludes no one
  • strengthening social cohesion in times of crisis
  • transparency and the social impact of actions
  • the active participation of young people and education in a culture of acceptance
  • the role of local government in creating open and accessible communities
  • the use of digital innovation to ensure equal opportunities for participation

The main objective is to develop the “Attica Volunteering Roadmap 2030” and the White Paper, with an emphasis on policies that promote equality, representation, and social justice.

Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias emphasized that volunteering can serve as a tool for community empowerment when it is based on everyone’s participation. A society becomes more resilient when it gives every citizen the opportunity to contribute, recognizing their uniqueness.

For his part, Mayor Yannis Moralis emphasized that volunteering is an act of social solidarity that can bridge differences and create a city that is more humane and open to all. Through initiatives already underway, emphasis is placed on youth participation and fostering a culture of inclusive collaboration.

This initiative highlights that diversity is not a barrier, but a strength. Volunteering, when designed with inclusion in mind, can become the common ground where people with different experiences and identities meet, collaborate, and shape a more just and equitable future.

At a time when societies are being tested, such actions remind us that solidarity is not merely a value—it is an action that has room for everyone.
