May in Athens means festival season. In the heart of spring, from May 1 through May 31, the City of Athens Festival transforms the entire city into an open-air stage for culture, creativity, and community.

Organized by Athens Development, the Festival once again takes place throughout the capital this year—from the historic center and traditional neighborhoods to the most modern and rapidly evolving districts. Residents and visitors from all over Greece and abroad are invited to participate in an experience that highlights the city’s vibrant energy.

Special emphasis is placed on the vision and approach of the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, who vigorously highlights the character and significance of the event: “This May, we have more than 300 reasons to enjoy Athens together. Pedestrian streets, squares, groves, and parks, galleries, archaeological sites, theaters, and cinemas welcome the greatest celebration of spring. Music, visual arts, performances, outdoor screenings, wellness activities, educational programs, culinary experiences, and themed walks come together in a mosaic that highlights the diversity of Athens. This is the City of Athens Festival. Come and feel the energy and pulse of Athens. Your city, your festival.”

For his part, Elissaios Sarmas, CEO of Athens Development, highlights the event’s social and cultural objectives: “Our goal this year is to bring culture closer to the public, utilizing every corner of the city as a space for expression and gathering. The City of Athens Festival creates experiences that appeal to everyone, strengthening people’s daily connection with public spaces and contemporary culture.”

Under the slogan “Your City, Your Festival,” Athens is celebrating with more than 300 free events, offering a rich and diverse program for all ages and interests.

Unique experiences await at every corner of the city: from a jazz band from North Carolina in the National Garden and the State School of Dance performance on the Arsakeio terrace, to the Winter Swimmers’ appearance at the National Archaeological Museum, the big parties on Lycabettus Hill, Zappeion, and Kerameikos, the traditional folk festivals, and the summer screenings of beloved films. The festive opening on May Day also holds a special place, with the traditional picnic at Plato’s Academy, which marks the start of the events.

With free events for everyone, open to all and guided by the principles of sustainability, the Festival creates a shared space for people to come together. Everyday life is transformed into an experience, and Athens comes alive in its most authentic and creative rhythm.
