Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas: Solidarity initiative with Easter gifts for children from vulnerable families

The City of Athens continues to send a powerful message of inclusion and solidarity by actively supporting children and families in vulnerable situations ahead of Easter.

On Holy Monday, at the Citizens’ Mutual Aid Hub of the Athens Municipality Reception and Solidarity Center (K.Y.A.D.A.), Easter items were distributed to 70 children from families facing economic and social difficulties. This initiative is not merely a provision of material aid, but a meaningful act of recognizing the need for equal opportunities, dignity, and the participation of all in the joy of the holidays.

In the presence of the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, it was emphasized that the concept of diversity is not only about acceptance but also about creating conditions where no child is excluded from basic experiences, such as an Easter gift or a moment of joy.

As the mayor stated, for many families, items such as a tsoureki, a candle, or a children’s book are not taken for granted, but rather small luxuries. Through such initiatives, an effort is made to bridge this gap so that all children—regardless of social or economic status—can feel that they belong.

For his part, the president of KYADA, Nikos Chrysogelos, highlighted the importance of collective effort, noting that support from citizens and organizations has made it possible to distribute tens of thousands of aid packages in recent years.

The initiative is expected to continue throughout Holy Week, with the goal of delivering Easter gifts to more than 1,000 children. In a society that is becoming increasingly multicultural, such initiatives remind us that diversity is not a barrier, but a strength—and that solidarity is the foundation for a more just and inclusive city.
