GameComp, an innovative Erasmus+ initiative, focuses on developing cutting-edge tools that support young people in acquiring key sustainability competences through engaging, game-based learning experiences. During the initial phase of the project, a pioneering tool was developed to enable young people to assess their level of proficiency in the twelve competences of the GreenComp Framework, the official EU framework for sustainability competences. The Sustainability Competences Assessment Tool responds to a real need: both young people and the professionals who work with them require a simple, accessible and effective way to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. By doing so, they can design personalised learning pathways that better correspond to each individual’s needs.
The tool is structured around thirty-six self-reflective questions that evaluate users’ knowledge, attitudes and skills related to each competence. As they respond, users participate in a gamified experience, helping the GameComp mascot—a bee—reach its destination while earning digital badges that reward their progress. Upon completion, users receive a personalised report detailing their score and level in each competence, along with tailored feedback. This report can be saved or shared with youth workers, educators or mentors who support their learning process.
This assessment tool represents one of the first concrete outputs of the GameComp project and forms the foundation for subsequent project activities. In the coming months, the project team will collaborate with stakeholders and young people to develop additional educational resources, including sixty digital educational games and sixty workshop scenarios accompanied by pedagogical guidelines and practical materials. Furthermore, an educator toolkit will be created, providing case studies, examples and guidance to help youth workers integrate the project’s outputs into their practice.
GameComp continues to advance with the overarching goal of empowering young people, strengthening their sustainability competences and offering interactive, engaging and innovative tools that support meaningful learning and personal development. The Sustainability Competences Assessment Tool constitutes a significant milestone toward that aim, making the assessment process not only useful but also enjoyable, and contributing to the broader effort to foster a new generation of active, environmentally aware and sustainability-minded citizens.
