4 Min Read

Skiathos is emerging internationally as a model destination in accessibility, demonstrating in practice that tourism and daily life can and should be accessible to all. The Municipality of Skiathos, with firm political will and strategic planning, has taken significant steps towards the inclusion of people with disabilities, placing accessibility at the heart of local development.

The recognition of this effort comes from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which included the Municipality of Skiathos in the Accessibility Good Practice Guide , published on January 30, 2025. The guide presents 25 global examples of destinations, infrastructure and businesses that have substantially invested in enhancing accessibility, innovation and social awareness.

Skiathos was the only Municipality to participate in the UNWTO International Conference “Tourism for All” , in November 2023 in San Marino, recognizing accessibility as a business opportunity , but also as a moral obligation to the island’s citizens and visitors.

Accessibility in Practice – Not in Theory

In Skiathos, accessibility is not just a theoretical goal. It is already part of the island’s daily life and infrastructure:

      • Since 2022 , modern municipal transportation has been operating with buses equipped to serve people with mobility problems.
      • Four of the island’s most popular beaches feature a Seatrac system, which allows independent access to the sea for people with mobility problems.
      • Since 2020 , Skiathos has been participating in the ExtraMilers platform, among the top 5 islands in the country, promoting accessible tourism.
      • In collaboration with the Paths of Greece organization, a network of hiking trails adapted to the needs of everyone has been formed, with a route in Koukounaries accessible to people with disabilities and a new accessible bridge in the same area.
      • The Municipality has proceeded with the construction of ramps in public spaces, schools and municipal buildings, while in the medieval Castle under restoration, care has been taken to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities.

An Inclusive Island – A Municipality with a Vision

The Municipality of Skiathos proves that enhancing accessibility is not just a technical issue, but a necessary social and cultural change of mindset . The local government, with consistency and vision, implements policies that improve the quality of life of citizens with disabilities and at the same time make the island more attractive for all visitors , regardless of their needs or particularities.

Recognizing that there are still steps to be taken, the Municipality continues to consistently invest in initiatives that build an equal everyday life for all.

Skiathos: An Island That Leaves No One Behind

Whether for holidays or permanent residence, Skiathos proves that it can be an island for everyone . With accessible infrastructure, transport, beaches, hiking trails and public spaces, it offers a quality and welcoming environment for people with disabilities.
