Slovak Diversity Day

The most impactful inclusion initiatives often emerge not from corporate strategies but from employees’ real-life experiences and needs. This was one of the key messages of a discussion held on the occasion of Diversity Day, organized by the Slovak Diversity Charter in cooperation with the Bratislava Cultural and Information Centre (BKIS)

From Employee Communities to Experiential Learning: Building Inclusion Through Everyday Actions

The discussion brought together representatives from Deutsche Telekom Services Europe Slovakia, NN Životná poisťovňa, and SAP Austria, who shared how their organizations foster LGBTQ+ . Speakers highlighted that successful initiatives frequently arise in response to specific employee needs, such as supporting parents returning from parental leave, creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ employees, or helping colleagues better understand different life experiences.

The panel emphasized that inclusion cannot be achieved through policies alone. While guidelines and benefits are important, real change happens through everyday interactions, employee communities, visible signs of support, and opportunities for meaningful dialogue. Examples included parent communities, cultural exchange events, rainbow lanyards worn by employees, and virtual reality workshops that help participants experience barriers faced by others.

A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of leadership support. While many initiatives begin with passionate employees, long-term success depends on management commitment, resources, and a workplace culture built on trust, empathy, and psychological safety. The speakers agreed that inclusion is not a one-time project but an ongoing process shaped by everyday decisions and actions.

The event concluded with a ceremonial signing of the Slovak Diversity Charter by seven new companies and organizations, which formally committed to promoting diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplaces. Since its launch in 2017, the Charter has grown to a network of 179 signatories representing a wide range of industries and sectors.

Queer Stories on Screen: A European Diversity Month Event

On May 21, Diversity Charter Slovakia, in cooperation with Initiative Inakosť, organized a side event as part of the European Diversity Month. A screening of short films with LGBTQ+ themes brought powerful stories about identity, acceptance, and human relationships.
